Fireworks accident causes death
Accidents with fireworks led to two injuries, one of which resulted in death, last night in the Dizzy Gillespie apartment complex in Cheraw.
According to Cheraw Police Chief Keith Thomas, the Cheraw Police Department responded to a call about 9:50 p.m. in reference to a call for medical assistance for a person being hit in the upper torso with fireworks.
Upon the officers’ arrival, they found 24-year-old M.C. Gallion Ill on the ground. Gallion was transported to McLeod Health Cheraw where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Thomas said an investigation was launched to determine the events that led up to the death. Several witnesses were interviewed immediately after the incident, and apparently Gallion was holding a cylinder tube in his hands in an attempt to discharge an aerial type firework. The firework exploded, striking him in the upper torso area, and he collapsed as a result of his injuries.
The Chesterfield County Coroner’s Office has ordered an autopsy, and the cause of death will not be known until results are given to the police department.
More details will be posted to Breaking News as information becomes available.
