Cheraw shooting, county car chase
The Cheraw Police Department responded to a call today about 4 a.m. in reference to a shooting in the Dizzy Gillespie apartment complex today, according to a statement from Cheraw Police Chief Keith Thomas. Responding officers found a black male gunshot victim in a vehicle who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chesterfield County Coroner’s Office.
Officers determined an adult female and a 6-month-child with injuries were inside an apartment. Both were transported to McLeod Health Cheraw. The adult was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The child was transferred to Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in Columbia and is expected to recover from a gunshot wound to the arm.
After investigation, the police department has made multiple arrests and is advising the person who removed guns from the area after the shooting to contact the police department and turn over the weapons.
Thomas said he will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. Monday to release more information.
Even as the shooting in Cheraw was being investigated, deputies with the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office responded to Bailey Saw Mill Road in the Ruby area of Chesterfield County in reference to a man with a gun who pointed a rifle at a victim.
