Mary Coward Baker

CHERAW – Mrs. Mary Coward Baker, 85, died on Wednesday, March 17, 2021.  Born, May 27, 1935 in Richmond County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Coy Coward, Sr. and the late Eliza Smith Coward. Mary was a member of Cheraw First Baptist Church and a member of the Marlboro Electric Co-Op WIRE.  She worked for the Marlboro County School District and Wallace High School from 1960 until 1997, and her hobbies included, puzzles, knitting and crocheting.  She also loved spending time with her grandsons.

Along with her parents, listed above, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Thurman Coward, Sr. (Lottie), Jimmy Coward, Sr. (Cleon), Luther Coward (Claire), Harmond Coward, Walker Coward and Coy Coward, Jr.; sisters, Pearl Coward Bullard (Elbert), Annie Coward McKnight (Wade), Mollie Coward Bailey (Eugene) and Beatrice Coward Todd (Don).

Mary leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 65 years, Robert “Bobby” S. Baker, Sr of the home; sons, Robert “Scott” Baker, Jr. (Susan Joan) of Cary, NC and Coy Baker (Becky) of Seven Lakes, NC; grandchildren, Robert “Robby” S. Baker, III and Timothy Coy Baker (Hailey Good); sisters-in-law, Orene Coward, Ruby Coward and Shirley Coward; and a niece, Connie Guinn.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, 2021 at Cheraw First Baptist Church. Burial followed at Old Saint David’s Church Cemetery in Cheraw. A visitation was held from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. just prior to the service Sunday at the Church.

Robert J. Carter

CHERAW – Mr. Robert J. Carter, age 54, entered into rest on Saturday, March 20, 2021. The family will greet friends from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Due to the continued COVID-19 risks, we ask that you practice social distancing at all times and refrain from any physical contact. The family would like for all attending the service to please wear a face covering.

Mr. Carter was born September 30, 1966 in Gaston County, NC a son of the late Joseph Carroll Carter and Janice Barker. He was a graduate of Hunter Huss High School of Gastonia, NC, Class of 1984. Robert was the owner and operator of Carter Jewelers in Cheraw since 1990. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing his guitar, and grilling out with friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul & Donna Barker, and Haskell & Ellen Constance Carter.

Survivors include his children, Stephanie Bryant of Chesterfield, SC, and Brian (Alyssa) Carter of Westlake, FL; and their mother, Donna Carter of Murrells Inlet, SC; grandchildren, Hailey Bryant, Oakley Bryant, Natalie Carter, and Valerie Carter; step-mother, Linda Carter of Mountville, SC; sister, Sharon (Chris) Jones of Clover, SC; brother, David (Ryann) Carter of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and companion, Cindy Barber of Cheraw, SC.

Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice House, 1203 E. Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506.

JoAnn Jenke Nicholson

Mrs. JoAnn Jenke Nicholson., 76, of Pageland, SC passed away on Friday, March 19, 2021 in Charlotte, NC.

She was born on August 28, 1944 in Pageland, SC to the late Howard Jenke and Lucille Mills Jenke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny L. Nicholson, three brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Nicholson was a member of Providence Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and traveling with the senior citizens. She and her late husband, owned J&J Grocery in Pageland.

JoAnn enjoyed spending time with her family and took pride in keeping a pretty yard. JoAnn enjoyed fishing and doing jigsaw puzzles.

Mrs. Nicholson is survived by her son, Michael Nicholson (Tammy) of Pageland, SC; daughters, Donna Hicks (Tim) of Pageland, SC and Cindy Davis (Bud) of Jefferson, SC; grandchildren, Brad Hicks (Tiffany), Garrett Hicks (Brandi), Lindsey Arant (Steven), Lauren Davis, Caitlyn Nicholson, Aleah Nicholson and Daniel Nicholson and great grandchildren, Madison Gainey, Brendon Gainey and Jack Arant.

Due to COVID 19, the family asks that everyone that attends the service to please wear a mask and keep in mind social distancing rules.

Anyone could come by Baumgartner Funeral Home on Sunday, March 21, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM to sign the register book and pay their respects.

A Celebration of Life Graveside Service was held on Monday, March 22, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, with Dr. Roger Wall, and Dr. Lindsey Powell officiating.  Burial will follow in the Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Providence Baptist Church, 232 Providence Church Road, Pageland, SC 29728.

Michael Lee ‘Bait’ Starling Sr.

WALLACE – Mr. Michael Lee “Bait” Starling, Sr., 60, died on Saturday, March 20, 2021. Born, September 6, 1960 in Las Animas, Colorado, he was a son of the late William Lawrence Starling, Sr. and the late Georgia Lois Elam Starling.  Michael worked for over 20 years with Steel Specialty, Inc. in Belmont, NC. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Cleveland Browns, the Carolina Tar Heels, and Davey Allison.

Along with his parents, listed above, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard “Buddy” Starling.

Michael leaves behind to cherish his memory, his sons, Michael L. Starling, Jr. of Gastonia, NC, Bryan L. Starling of Gastonia, NC, and Josh Watkins of Charlotte, NC; daughters, April M. Starling of Belmont, NC, Christina Casal of Dallas, NC and Tonya Watkins of Gastonia, NC; brothers, William “Bill” L. Starling, Jr. (Millie), Ted Starling (Linda), and Brent Starling (Teresa); sisters, Terri Helms (Roger), Denise Clinkscales (Timmy), and Fran Bingham; fourteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a sister-in-law, Diane Starling.

A Private service will be held at a later date.
