Officers investigating Cheraw shooting

Cheraw Police Chief Keith Thomas announced this afternoon the Cheraw Police Department was dispatched July 3 to Highway 1 near Keith’s ABC in reference to a shooting.

Officers were able to recover spent shell casings and projectiles from the area.

Thomas said no one was injured, but several businesses were struck with bullets.

The suspect vehicle was identified as a silver/gray Nissan Altima with a North Carolina temporary plate.  It appears the Nissan was shooting in the direction of a passing vehicle.

Later that evening, an officer spotted the Nissan. When the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, the Nissan fled, and a chase ensued. The chase continued into Marlboro County, where the vehicle crashed at the North Carolina border, and all occupants fled the scene on foot.

Thomas said the North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Thomas also said evidence, including guns and narcotics, was recovered at the scene that will help identify the suspects. He added this case is still active.
