County council passes Highway 9 ordinance

Chesterfield County Council passed the third and final reading of an ordinance to apply an existing 1 percent sales tax to the Highway 9 widening project, beginning in 2025.

This approval allows a referendum to be placed on the ballot in the Nov. 2 election so voters can vote for or against the tax. If voters approve, the county can borrow against anticipated revenue from that tax.

While outside funds for the $126 million project will be sought, the county has to show local participation, and a minimum 20 percent match of the project cost is suggested if state funding is acquired.

The last day to register to vote in this election is Sunday, Oct. 3. Voter registrations will be accepted if postmarked by Monday, Oct. 4. More information on registration is available at scvotes.org or the Chesterfield County Voter Registration and Elections office by calling (843) 623-2265.
