SCDOT says bridge is safe
The South Carolina Department of Transportation just issued a press release stating the southbound US 1/SC 9 bridge over the Great Pee Dee River near Cheraw is safe for all traffic that weighs 34 tons or less and poses no hazard to motorists.
School buses, garbage trucks, most emergency vehicles and all vehicles under 34 tons gross vehicle weight may continue to cross the bridge.
The SCDOT announced last Dec. 1 that a routine inspection found minor repairs that need to be made and posted signage Jan. 10 restricting the heaviest of vehicles from using the bridge until permanent repairs are made. This posting will remain in place until permanent repairs are made to the bridge later in 2022.
The northbound bridge is not restricted and remains open to all vehicles.
Design for the bridge repair is currently underway, and repair work should begin in the late summer of this year.
