Jesse ‘Calvin’ Freeman,

NEWPORT, Tenn.

Mr. Jesse “Calvin” Freeman, age 81, currently residing in Cheraw, SC, entered into rest on Thursday, January 6, 2021. A graveside service with military honors in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cheraw, SC, will be announced at a later date.

Due to the continued COVID-19 precautions, the family respectfully requests no visitors at the home during this time. Thank you for your love, prayers, and understanding. 

Mr. Freeman was born March 14, 1940 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Jesse Freeman and Gertrude Curry Freeman McDonald. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in history from the University of South Carolina. Calvin was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, and a retired employee of Sonoco Industries with over 30 years of service. A man with a love for music, Calvin was a talented pianist who enjoyed all types of classical music genres. Other hobbies included playing golf, going for a walk, and most enjoyably “snacking,” and eating.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Freeman was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Harry Atwood Board, Jr.; nephew, Christopher Atwood Board; and close friend, Frankie Munn.

Survivors include his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Board of Cheraw, SC; niece, Patti Board of Cheraw, SC; great nephew, Preston (Michael) Stanley of Tulsa, OK; god-son, Ronnie (Laura) Munn of Newport, TN; and close friend, Earl Ricker of Newport, TN.

Darryl Allen McGrath

CHERAW – Mr. Darryl Allen McGrath, 67, died on Friday, January 7, 2022.  Born, February 24, 1954, in Alliance, Ohio, he was a son of the late Lee Roy and Clara (Binius) McGrath. Darryl was a loyal and hardworking employee of Jones Fencing where he worked for 31 years. He was a loving husband, a great dad, and a very proud grandfather. Darryl was an avid reader and enjoyed cornhole, fishing, and the outdoors. He also loved his chickens and his dog, Boo. He was a fighter and he fought to the very end.

Along with his parents, listed above, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Bonna Jean McGrath, Marilyn (Jim) Funkhouser, and a brother, Bill (Sharon) McGrath and his daughter, Amanda H. McGrath.

Darryl leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 35 years, Teresa (McIlvain) McGrath of the home; sons, Ezekiel McGrath of Alliance, Ohio and Simeon McGrath of Cheraw, SC; a daughter, Rachel McGrath of Wallace, SC; a brother, Lee (Charlene) McGrath; sisters, Diane (Mike) Cantwell, Karen (Larry) Keenan, and Joyce (John) Keiser; and three grandchildren, Parker Green, Luke Eubanks, and Lexi Eubanks.

No services are planned at this time.

Alice Brooks Shaw Parker

CHESTERFIELD – Mrs. Alice Brooks Shaw Parker, age 90, entered into rest on Sunday, January 2, 2022. Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, January 4, 2022 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Pastor Tracy Gooding, Rev. Jimmy Knotts, and Rev. Dean Parker with burial following in the Bay Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Tuesday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Parker was born September 12, 1931 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Walter Leroy Brooks, Sr. and Delilah Elizabeth Sellers Brooks. She was a retired employee of Weller Industries and a former employee of Puritan Manufacturing, and Delta Mills (J.P. Stevens.) Alice was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and a former member of Bay Springs Baptist Church for many years. Her hobbies included shopping, sewing, cooking, and working in her yard. Above all else, Alice was the true matriarch of her family and enjoyed time spent with them.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Parker was also preceded in death by her husbands, Charlie Parker, Ansel Johnson, and Woodrow Shaw; brothers, Walter Leroy “June-Bug” Brooks, Jr., and Jimmy Brooks; sisters, Sara B. Eddins, Linda B. Williams, and Betty B. Teal; son, Kenneth Woodrow “Kenny” Shaw; and infant son, Gerald Ray Shaw.

Survivors include her children, Rodger Dale Shaw, and Robin (Ray) McAlister both of Chesterfield, SC; daughter-in-law, Barbara T. Shaw of Patrick, SC; grandchildren, Krista (Wade) Lambert, Dillon Shaw, Heather (Derek) Copeland, Toni (Nick) Cooke, Gerald (Loleen) Shaw, and Kimberly (Bruce Chavis) Shaw; great grandchildren, Hazee, Sawyer, Graham, Garrett, Natalie, Angelina, Taylor, Ryleigh, Landon, J.W., and Greyson; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
