Francis ‘Spud’ Farr Conrad

CHERAW – Francis Farr “Spud” Conrad, 79, died Tuesday, April 18, 2023. Born in Vero Beach, FL, he was the son of the late Raymond Farr Conrad and Rada Marie Cameron Conrad. He grew up in White City, Florida. Spud, as he was affectionately known, enjoyed telling stories, hanging out with family and friends, often talking for hours. He also enjoyed Nascar, being outside, and watching westerns. Most of all, he loved his family, especially Candy, his wife of 48 years, his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Candace Tinney Conrad, of the home, his son, Mark Aaron Conrad (Carrie), of Cheraw, SC, his daughters, Summer Conrad Owen (Joey), of Chesterfield, SC, and Melissa Hendricks, of Amarillo, TX, and his grandchildren, Cam Owen, Laney Owen, Luke Owen, Emery Conrad, Ava Conrad, Lexi Jordan, Liam Jordan, and Skye Jordan.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Dwayne Conrad, and his brother and his sisters.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Kiser Funeral Home has been entrusted to serve the Conrad family during their time of grief.

Anthony Brent (Pecan) Curtis

RUBY – Mr. Anthony Brent (Pecan) Curtis, age 50, entered into rest on Monday, April 17, 2023 at his home. Funeral services were held at 5:00 PM Thursday, April 20, 2023 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Pastor Ronald Thurman and Brent Taylor with burial following in the Ruby Cemetery. The family received friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at the funeral home.

The funeral service will be streamed live on the Miller Rivers Caulder Funeral Home Facebook page.

Mr. Curtis was born August 7, 1972 in Cheraw, SC a son of Carolyn Moore Curtis and the late Larry Kenneth Curtis. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School, Class of 1990, and received his welding degree from Northeastern Tech. Mr. Curtis was a member of Ruby Baptist Church. An avid outdoorsman, Brent enjoyed hunting, running his hunting dogs, and fishing. He worked many years as a millwright and also enjoyed working on go-karts and being a part of the GTG Racing team.

Brent will be fondly remembered for his easy-going personality and sense of humor. He never met a stranger and made numerous friends throughout the years in his membership with Hair Snatchin’ Kennels, Sandland Hunting Club, and Red Land Hunting Club. Of all things that he enjoyed throughout his life, being “Pa-Brent” to his grandchildren and niece was most special.

Survivors include his son, Michael (Brianna) Hannah of Ruby, SC; grandchildren, Braylan Hannah, and McKenlee Hannah; mother, Carolyn M. Curtis of the home; sister, Amy C. (Ray) Wallace of Chesterfield, SC; niece, Rayleigh Wallace; and numerous cousins and extended family.

Cecil Leverne Grooms

CHERAW – Cecil Leverne Grooms, of Cheraw, South Carolina, was called to his heavenly home on April 13, 2023 at the age of 66. Mr. Grooms passed with his wife and children at his side after days of precious time spent in the loving presence of his mother, siblings, and close loved ones. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend to many.

Mr. Grooms was born on March 22, 1957 at the Perry Clinic in Chesterfield, SC. He was the oldest child of Luther P. and Gladys Wallace Grooms. He grew up in the Teal’s Mill area and graduated from Chesterfield High School in 1975. On November 4, 1978, Cecil married the love of his life, Kathy Sims of Ruby, SC. Married for nearly 44 and a half years at the time of his death, Cecil always told Kathy she was, “My girl, my whole world.” During Kathy’s own battle with cancer three years ago, Cecil provided unfailing care and never left her side throughout.

He was profoundly proud to be a father, and his children grew to be a nationally recognized teacher, an exceptionally gifted Nurse Practitioner, and his baby girl is a courageous Military Veteran and a brilliant Medical Laboratory Scientist. Cecil’s “girls” were his proudest achievements, and he bragged on “Kristi Kat,” “Danie Leigh,” and “Whitney Beth” every possible chance that he could get. Mr. Grooms’ grandchildren were the light of his life and he spent hundreds of hours happily watching his grandson, Owen, who was “Pa’s Boy,” playing ball. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing, cheering for the Cleveland Browns and the Carolina Gamecocks, and spending time with his friends and loved ones.

A carpenter by trade, Mr. Grooms designed and built the home that he and Kathy raised their three daughters in. Especially skilled at custom finishing work, he is responsible for many of the most beautiful homes in this part of South Carolina.

Cecil is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy of the home as well as their daughters: Kristi Grooms of Chapin, Danielle (Brian) Johnson of Cheraw, and Whitney (Alan) Sanders also of Cheraw. Mr. Grooms was an adored “Pa” to his grandchildren: Jonah, Brianna, Gracie, Owen, and Ella Kate Johnson as well as Luke, Harper, and Abel Sanders. He is also survived by his mother, Gladys Grooms, his siblings Arlene (Rex) Hancock, Troy Grooms, and Jeff Grooms, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Mr. Grooms was preceded in death by his father, Luther P. Grooms, his brother, Danny L. Grooms, and two grandchildren: Michael Grooms and River Sanders.

His obituary was written by his oldest daughter, Kristi.

Funeral services for Mr. Grooms were held at 2:00 PM Sunday, April 16, 2023 in the Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel by Brother Ricky Malloy and Rev. Dennis Wallace with burial following in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Margaret Helen Tarleton Jones

CHERAW – Mrs. Margaret Helen Tarleton Jones, age 86, entered into rest on Sunday, April 16, 2023. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 19, 2023 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by the Honorable Rep. Pastor Richie Yow and Brent Taylor with burial following in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jones was born December 16, 1936 in Chesterfield County, SC a daughter of the late Walter and Viola Wallace Tarleton. Mrs. Margaret, along with her late husband, Henley, founded Jones Furniture Mart of Cheraw. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church and was also a very active member in the Cheraw chapter of the Eastern Star. A very loving (and occasionally strong-willed) lady, Mrs. Margaret was the true matriarch of her family. She enjoyed cooking for her family and traveling.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jones was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Henley L. Jones, Sr.; brothers, Kenneth “K.T.” Tarleton, and Alvin D. “Bobo” Tarleton; and grandchildren, Brandi Jones, and Henley Lee “Trey” Jones, III.

Survivors include her 2 sons, Henley Lee (Brandy) Jones, Jr., and John Paul Jones both of Cheraw, SC; daughter, Helen Jones Richardson of Cheraw, SC; grandchildren, Devin Lee (Chris) Todd of Florence, SC, Katelyn Sumter Richardson, and Hensley Brianna Jones both of Cheraw, SC; great grandchildren, Kamden Wade Richardson, and Konnor Lee Todd; brother, Maynard (Judy) Tarleton of Cheraw, SC; sister-in-law, Louise Jones of Cheraw, SC and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff, administration, and friends of Cheraw Healthcare and Springhill Assisted Living for the exceptional love and care they provided. A special thank you is also offered for the staff of Gentiva Hospice of Chesterfield for their care and support.

Welbourne Andrews White Jr.

CHARLESTON – Mr. Welbourne Andrews White, Jr., age 64, entered into rest April 17, 2023. Funeral services were held at 1:00 PM Sunday, April 23, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church of Cheraw by the Reverend Dr. Dan Sansbury. A private burial was held in the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery of Chesterfield, SC.

Mr. White was born June 20, 1958 in Tucson, CA a son of Elizabeth Holman (Judge Edwin “Brother”) Davis and the late Welbourne Andrews (Rebecca) White, Sr. Welbourne was a 1976 graduate of Spring Valley High School, Columbia, SC. He was a devout Christian and member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. Following high school, Mr. White enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served 2 years prior to being diagnosed with a mental illness and receiving an Honorable Discharge.

Welbourne spent his adult life struggling with mental illness and the challenges it brings. He was a very loving, warm-hearted, and funny son, brother, and uncle. He loved God and his family very deeply. His family holds as a treasure many fond memories of family vacations and numerous other holidays and get-togethers. Welbourne was blessed with an amazing family that always sought to support him and make his life as full and accomplished as they could, despite his challenges. His life was a gift from God and left an impression on everyone. To know him was to love him.

Survivors include his brothers, Ed (Bea) White of Columbia, SC, Mark (Dawn) White of Moncks Corner, SC, Michael (Yohana) White of Irmo, SC; sisters, Beth (Ron) Bourne of Chesterfield, SC, and Jessica Pease of Fort Mill, SC; nieces and nephews, Edward White, Jr., Natalie White, Rembert White, Parker Bourne, Louisa Bourne, Lexi White, Brendan White, Austin Pease and Margo Pease.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jonathan Donahue and the entire nursing staff of Coastal Carolina Hospital for the compassionate care provided to Welbourne and their family.
