Carlos A. Garces
CHERAW – Carlos A. Garces, 72, died Tuesday, October 11, 2023. Born in Guines, Havana, Cuba, he was a son of the late Fancisco and Alicia Garces. Carlos attended Living Word Ministry, Chesterfield, SC, where he was a member of their security team. He retired from Crown, Inc where he worked for 20+ years as a welder and fabricator. Carlos had a lifetime membership with the NRA and SC Sportsman. An avid hunter and fisherman, he also enjoyed target shooting, woodworking, building furniture, but his favorite pastime was mowing his grass, even when it didn’t need it! Carlos lived life to the fullest, spending time with his family, riding four-wheelers and eating great cheesecake.
Carlos is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jonnie Polson Garces, sons, Juan (Angela) Garces, of Lancaster, SC, and Carlos A. (Tara) Garces, Jr., of Cheraw, SC, a brother, Frank Garces, Jr., of Miami, FL, a sister, Amelie Mondes, of Illinois, six grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents listed above.
A Celebration of Life was held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Living Word Ministry, Chesterfield, SC.
Burial will be in Old St. Davids Cemetery, at a later date.

Eli Steen Jr.
CHERAW – Mr. Eli Steen, Jr., age 74, entered into rest on Saturday, October 8, 2023. Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM Thursday, October 12, 2023 at The First Methodist Church of Bennettsville by Pastor Taylor Coates, Chaplin Tilden “Sam” Boone, and Rev. Patrick Peterkin with burial following at the Sunset Memorial Park. The family greeted friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
Mr. Steen was born on February 27, 1949, in Bennettsville, SC, to the late Eli and Mary Etta Huggins Steen. He was a retiree of INA Bearing after 48 years of service. Mr. Steen was a Jack of all trades who could do anything. Eli enjoyed raising cows, working on tractors, and camping. He was an avid NASCAR fan and he enjoyed cheering on Kyle Larson.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Steen was also preceded in death by his brothers Asbery and Bobby Steen.
Survivors include his wife, Heather Steen of the home; children, Kyle B. Steen of Charlotte, NC, Inge J. Ayers of Cheraw, SC, Tonya A. Williams of Cheraw, SC; grandchildren, Jonathan Williams of Cheraw, SC, Kayla Williams of Cheraw, SC; brother, Curtis Steen of Kernersville, NC; sisters, Mary Etta Israel of Miami, FL, Elizabeth S. Floyd of Rockingham, SC, Frances S. Adams of North Myrtle Beach, SC; numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, Smoke.
