A dispute that Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office investigators said escalated through multiple confrontations ended in gunfire and the death of a 20-year-old Patrick man.
Deputies responded at 9:39 p.m. Monday, May 4, to a reported shooting at 18 Brangus Lane in Cheraw, where they found a wrecked pickup truck occupied by Landon Scott Sellers, 20, of Patrick.
Sellers was pronounced dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound.
According to Sheriff Cambo Streater, the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute involving Jihad Ellis Lee, Zion Elijah McRae, Elisjay Zayon Christian James, and Maurice Michael Brown Jr.
Officials said the investigation revealed a physical altercation occurred the night of Friday, May 1, followed by another confrontation the night of Saturday, May 2, at the Sonic in Cheraw, where shots were fired. Investigators said tensions between the individuals involved continued to escalate leading up to the fatal shooting.
Streater said during the incident, gunfire was discharged from the moving vehicle that contained Sellers, Lee, James, and McRae, while additional gunfire was discharged at the vehicle by Maurice Brown Jr.
Sellers, who was driving the pickup truck, was struck by gunfire and later died from his injuries on May 4.
According to statements gathered by investigators, Sellers was not believed to be the intended target and was not believed to have fired a weapon during the incident.
Three arrests were initially announced following the shooting.
McRae, 18, of Cheraw, was charged with first-degree assault and battery and breach of peace of an aggravated nature.
James, 19, of Cheraw, was also charged with first-degree assault and battery and breach of peace of an aggravated nature.
Maurice Brown Jr., 18, of Cheraw, was initially charged with obstruction of justice. Investigators later upgraded the charges against Brown to include murder.
On Tuesday, May 5, deputies arrested a fourth suspect, Lee, 18, of Cheraw. Lee was charged with first-degree assault and battery and breach of peace of an aggravated nature.
Streater said on Wednesday, May 6, Maurice Brown Sr., 42, of Cheraw, self-surrendered. Brown has been charged with tampering with evidence as part of the ongoing investigation into the shooting death of Sellers.
“This is a tragic situation that has left a young man dead and multiple families forever impacted,” said Streater in a statement. “Our deputies and investigators worked around the clock to bring those responsible into custody. We extend our deepest condolences to the Sellers family during this difficult time and ask the community to continue praying for them.”
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active and additional charges are possible.
