Two Chesterfield men have been arrested in connection with the investigation into a deceased horse that was found along Harden Swamp Road on July 4.
Following what Sheriff Cambo Streater described as an extensive investigation, Chesterfield County Animal Control deputies identified two individuals believed to be responsible for the unlawful disposal of the horse and related animal cruelty offenses.
Lorenzo Moore, of Chesterfield, was charged with failure to bury or improperly burying a dead animal; littering exceeding 500 pounds; and ill treatment of animals in general – torture.
Eddie Wayne Johnson, of Chesterfield, was charged with failure to bury or improperly burying a dead animal; and littering exceeding 500 pounds.
Streater said the arrests demonstrate the agency’s commitment to investigating animal cruelty cases and holding those responsible accountable.
“The abuse, neglect, and cruel treatment of animals have absolutely no place in Chesterfield County,” Streater said. “Those who commit these senseless acts should know that this Sheriff’s Office will pursue every available investigative lead and work tirelessly to hold offenders accountable.”
He added Animal Control deputies are committed to protecting animals and that the sheriff’s office “will not tolerate violence or cruelty against animals in our community.”
He also thanked county residents who came forward with information during the investigation.
“I want to personally thank the citizens of Chesterfield County whose willingness to come forward with information helped bring this investigation to a successful outcome,” said Streater. “Your partnership with law enforcement makes our community stronger and helps ensure justice is served.”
Officials said the tips from the public played a critical role in identifying those responsible for the alleged crimes.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said additional charges or arrests could be made as new information becomes available.
