Area prepares for winter weather

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather advisory is in effect for all areas of South Carolina south of the I-85 corridor.
The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory until 10 a.m. on Jan. 22, with wind chills as low as -9°F.
A Winter Weather Advisory will also be in effect from 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, until 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, forecasts call for up to 1 inch of snow. Slippery road conditions are expected, particularly impacting commutes Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.
The Department of Natural Resources S
tate Climatology Office said flurries have already begun in parts of the Upstate and Central Savannah River Area. Heavier snow is expected to develop this afternoon.
The storm is now forecasted to bring heavier precipitation than initially expected, posing a more significant impact statewide.
The heaviest snowfall will occur along the coastal plain. However, sleet and freezing rain near the coast will limit snow accumulation.
Gusty winds during and after the storm will cause blowing and drifting snow, particularly in areas with heavier snowfall.
Precipitation will taper off early Wednesday morning, ending before daybreak in the Upstate and by around 10 a.m. along the coast.
Roads across the state will become treacherous tonight and remain hazardous through Wednesday morning. Afternoon melting followed by nighttime refreezing south of I-20 will create icy conditions on secondary and back roads Wednesday and Thursday nights, potentially extending into Friday morning.
