County council considers one percent sales tax

Chesterfield County Council has unanimously passed the first reading of an ordinance to authorize a county-wide referendum Nov. 2 requesting the imposition of a one percent sales tax for transportation infrastructure.

If approved by the voters, this sales tax will begin only after the current 25-year K-12 public education sales tax expires in 2025. State law prohibits counties from imposing more than one sales tax at the same time, in addition to requiring a referendum to be held during a general election.

The second reading of this ordinance, which will include the project list and length of the proposed sales tax, is scheduled for a July 22 special meeting of council that begins at 9 a.m. The third and final reading is scheduled for the Aug. 11 regular meeting of council.

Before council’s potential adoption of the ordinance, there will be a required public hearing to receive input on the merits of the ordinance.

1% SALES TAX. DOESN’T SOUND LIKE MUCH BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE 1%….2%…..THAT THE STATE OF S. C. HAS PUT ON RESIDENTS ON GAS AND OTHER TAXES FOR ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE. IF YOU LOOK INTO MR. LUGH LEATHERMAN’S POCKETS ALONG WITH SOME OTHERS, THERE SHOULD BE MORE MONEY THAN YOU WILL EVER NEED. “QUIT TAXING YOUR RESIDENTS”.
