Cheraw tax preparer charged with willfully preparing false tax returns
The S.C. Department of Revenue announced today it has charged Cheraw tax preparer Victoria Smith Hughes with two counts of willfully preparing false tax returns in reference to a client’s tax returns for 2018 and 2019.
According to SCDOR agents, Hughes underreported gross sales and overstated deductions on sales tax returns she prepared and filed on behalf of her client. The false deductions and underreported sales were included without the client’s knowledge or consent and resulted in an understatement of more than $29,000 in sales tax due to the state.
