Lucas not seeking re-election

S.C. Speaker of the House Jay Lucas (R-Hartsville) announced during a budget meeting today in Columbia that he would not run for re-election this November. Lucas, who has represented the southwestern area of Chesterfield County since 1999, was the first Republican to represent Chesterfield County in the S.C. House since Reconstruction. He was elected speaker in 2014.

“I will hope that each of you believes I have been a worthy servant of this chamber,” said Lucas.
