Two women charged with abuse, which led to death of a vulnerable adult
South Carolina Law Enforcement has charged two women with abandoning a vulnerable adult in CHESCO housing in Chesterfield County, which led to the person’s death in September of last year.
According to SLED, Janique Darrelle Stanton of Bennettsville and Amani My’Shawna McCray of Cheraw were charged on April 25 with abuse/neglect, resulting in the death of a vulnerable adult.
Arrest warrants said on Sept. 6, 2023, Stanton and McCray both knew that the victim was not supposed to be left alone for any amount of time.
The victim, who was a resident of CHESCO Services and a vulnerable adult, was left alone in their apartment for an undetermined amount of time.
According to the warrants, when Stanton and McCray returned to the apartment, the victim was found in respiratory distress, but neither woman failed to contact emergency medical services immediately and did not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
SLED officials said the victim died before EMS arrived.
Stanton, 27, and McCray, 19, were booked at the Chesterfield County Detention Center.
The Fourth Circuit Solicitor’s Office will prosecute the case.
