UPDATED: Young woman dies after being shot in parking lot in downtown Cheraw

A man was charged with murder after a deadly shooting in the parking lot of SpringHill Suites in Cheraw early Sunday, Aug. 18.
Cheraw Police Chief Julius Riley said dispatch advised officers
at 1:42 a.m. of a possible shooting at the Spring Hill Suites Hotel parking lot, located on 201 Front Street, with one person down.
Police arrived on scene at 1:43 a.m. and found a woman, identified as 22-year-old Sadaijah Pittman of Cheraw, unresponsive from a gunshot wound.
Riley said as one officer stayed with Pittman, a second officer asked who was responsible.
The officer was then directed to a subject, later identified as Ty’Reek Nasir Guinyard.
As the
officer approached Guinyard, the officer asked him if he was armed.
Riley said Guinyard stated that he was not armed.
The o
fficer approached cautiously, gave him orders to stand up and turn around, and placed him in restraints. Riley said Guinyard was taken into custody and was placed in the patrol vehicle to get him away from the crowd, which had become hostile and attempted to assault Guinyard.
Once in the patrol vehicle, the supervising
officer took Guinyard to the Cheraw Police Department’s jail for processing.
Riley said as other officers arrived on the scene, the area was taped off to preserve evidence.
The State Law Enforcement Division’s Crime Scene Unit was contacted to assist with the crime scene, obtain latent prints, and search the suspect’s vehicle.
Riley said Cheraw police conducted a search for the missing weapon, which they were successful in locating. He added officers were also able to identify witnesses, which were interviewed by detectives, who were also able to obtain statements.
Video surveillance from the
hotel was obtained by detectives of the Cheraw Police Department.
Pittman was declared deceased by Chesterfield County Coroner Kip Kiser.
Riley said an autopsy is scheduled for later this week.
Guinyard has been charged with assaults/assault and Battery third;  murder; and weapons/possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Guinyard was transported to the Chesterfield County Detention Center, where he will await a bond hearing to be scheduled and held by the Circuit Court Judge.

Riley said a brief memorial service was held in Pittman’s honor in the same parking lot where her life was stolen from her.
“The Cheraw Police Department wishes to express our sincere and deepest condolences to the family of Ms. Pittman and renew our commitment to ensure that such senseless tragedies become a thing of the past,”
said Riley.
