NWS issues advisory on travel, closures/delays for Jan. 23

The National Weather Service issued an advisory on possible hazardous travel conditions during the morning hours of Thursday, Jan. 23.
Officials said there has been some melting snow Wednesday, Jan. 22 with temperatures plunging in the teens in the evening.
Any lingering water on roadways will refreeze. This could create hazardous travel conditions, especially on secondary roads, bridges, and overpasses.
Officials noted black ice is difficult to see and distinguish from dry surfaces, which can catch you unaware while you are driving or walking, causing you to lose control of your motor
vehicle or to slip and fall.

Closures and Delays for Thursday, Jan. 23

Chesterfield County School District will be closed.

Chesterfield County government offices will operate on a one-hour delay. All county offices will open at 9:30 a.m.

All ALPHA Behavioral Health Center offices will open at 10 a.m.

All Northeastern Technical College campuses will operate on a delay. Campuses in Cheraw and Pageland will open at 9:30 a.m., and Marlboro County and Dillon County campuses will open at 11 a.m. All classes will be canceled on respective campuses during closures.

Morning of 1/22/25, Cheraw’s main streets were more dangerous than the rural roads… It almost appeared as if the town sprayed ICE on the road instead of brine. The entire surface of the MAIN streets were completely covered in a uniform layer of ice. Very dangerous- everyone was sliding regardless of speed. Please plan in advance next time.
