SLED charges McBee police captain, McBee woman with obstruction of justice and other charges

Gregory P. Block

Janece Jorden Curtiss,
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has charged Gregory P. Block, 40, with misconduct in office and obstruction of justice. The charges were filed Thursday, Aug. 7.
SLED also charged Janece Jorden Curtiss, 34, with unlawful conduct toward a child and obstruction of justice Thursday, Aug. 7.
According to warrants from SLED, between Oct. 14, 2024, and the present, McBee Police Department Capt. Block provided false and/or misleading information to the Department of Social Services, school, medical facilities and on his MPD report.
In the warrants, it said Block never scheduled a forensic interview as he told DSS and medical providers he would.
In the arrest warrant affidavit supplement, SLED Special Agent Michael Connelly provided the following information.
On Oct. 14, 2024, Curtiss took a child to a hospital. Once there, medical staff examined the child and saw bleeding.
The examining physician believed the injuries could be sustained abuse, which could be sexual in nature.
Connelly wrote in the affidavit that medical staff requested MPD and DSS to respond to the hospital.
Curtiss said the injuries were sustained when the child fell into a refrigerator in McBee and happened when the child was home alone.
In the affidavit, Curtiss told Block that a registered sex offender lived nearby and was loitering around.
In Block’s initial call to DSS, he reported Curtiss had left the child home alone at the time of the incident. Block said Curtiss was trying to coach the child on what to say as medical personnel had told him the injuries were not consistent with Curtiss’ explanation, and Block requested DSS to respond.
The affidavit stated the examining physician contacted a hospital and told them he was sending the child there so they could perform sedation and an examination to assess whether there was the possibility of sexual assault. The physician discharged the child with the expectation Block and Curtiss were taking the child to the hospital.
Connelly wrote in the affidavit that less than one hour after initially calling DSS, Block called them and said he would conduct an investigation, schedule a forensic interview of the child and cancelled DSS’s response.
The affidavit also stated Block generated an MPD incident report that contained a false statement and partial information that was misleading. In addition, Block produced a letter for the child’s school stating he had investigated the injury.
The affidavit showed that on Oct. 18, 2024, Curtiss took the child to a medical facility with complaints of pain, blood in urine, difficulty urinating and a foul odor. The physician noted some injuries to the child. Block told the physician that he was not concerned with sexual assault but was going to schedule a forensic interview for the child.
It is noted in the affidavit that Block and Curtiss initiated a sexual relationship following the incident.
The affidavit further noted the child was not taken for medical examination as instructed, and SLED could not find any medical personnel at any medical facility that received documents for analysis and/or have a scheduled forensic interview.
The affidavit stated Curtiss called July 28, 2025, and requested the physician change the medical report to conclude no evidence of possible sexual assault was found. It was also noted between Oct. 14, 2024, to the present that Curtiss did place the child at unreasonable risk of harm affecting the child’s mental and/or physical health related to abuse that was possibly sexual in nature and that she intentionally attempted to impede SLED and DSS from conducting their respective investigations.
Both Block and Curtiss were arrested and booked into the Chesterfield County Detention Center. Both Block and Curtiss posted bond and were released.
The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney.
Officials with the Town of McBee released a statement Thursday and said they were aware of the recent charges involving one of its police officers and take the matter very seriously.
“The officer has been suspended without pay. We remain committed to transparency, we intend to continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement, and the Town will share updates as appropriate,” said McBee Town officials.
