McBee High student dies after collision in Darlington County
A McBee High student died in a fatal collision on Friday, Aug. 22, in Darlington County.
According to Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the collision occurred on West Old Camden Road near New Market Road, approximately six miles north of Hartsville.
The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. when a 2012 Jeep Wrangler, traveling westbound, attempted to pass a 2014 Ford pickup truck that was also heading west.
The Jeep struck the front portion of the pickup, veered off the right side of the road, hit a ditch, overturned, and collided with a utility pole.
The driver of the Jeep was injured and transported by EMS to Carolina Pines Hospital.
The Jeep’s passenger, identified by the Darlington County Coroner’s Office as Annabelle Andrews, passed away at the scene. Andrews was a sophomore at McBee High School.
The driver of the Ford pickup was not injured.
Ridgeway said the collision remained under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
McBee Mayor Glenn Odom, in a post on the town’s Facebook page, proclaimed Aug. 23 as a day of prayer for the families and friends of Andrews, for Harley Boykin and her family, for the doctors providing care to Boykin, and for the entire McBee community.
“In the face of unimaginable loss, our hearts are heavy,” he wrote in the post. “We stand together in grief, in love, and in hope—lifting up those closest to Annabelle and Harley with our prayers, our presence, and our unwavering support. Let this day be one of reflection, remembrance, and unity. Whether in quiet moments or shared gatherings, may we hold space for healing and honor the lives that touched so many. We are McBee. And today, we pray as one.”
