Caren Austin

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Caren Nicole Austin, 33, died Friday, February 24, 2023. Born in Roanoke VA she was a daughter of Lisa Reep of Rockingham, NC and Mark Austin of Bluefield, WV. She loved being a mommy and aunt.

Surviving are her parents listed above, a son, Christopher Johnson of Hope Mills, NC, a brother, Dillin Reep of Rockingham, NC, a sister, Kayla Smith of Rockingham, NC, grandparents, Caren Tignor of Chesterfield, SC and Jo Ann Reep of Wallace, SC, also, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by grandparents, Daniel Tignor, Sr., Chap and Mary
Austin.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

James Calvin Brock Sr.

CHERAW – Mr. James Calvin Brock, Sr., age 83, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 20, 2023 at his home with his family by his side. Funeral Services were held at 1:00 PM Friday, February 24, 2023 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Pastor Jason Pope and Pastor Doug Anderson with burial following in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family greeted friends from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home.

Mr. Brock was born April 24, 1939 in Chesterfield County, SC a son of the late Archie Clyde Brock and Nancy Jane Moore Brock. He was a retired employee of CSX Railroad and a faithful member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church where he served as former Deacon and brotherhood member. Calvin enjoyed mechanic work and repairing older model cars to help others have an affordable vehicle. An humble Christian man, Calvin loved and was dedicated to his family and church. One of his greatest joys in life was being “Pa-Pa” to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. Brock also held the distinct record of being the longest living heart recipient in the world, living nearly 35 years after his transplant.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Brock was also preceded in death by his son, James “Bo” Calvin Brock, Jr.; infant grandson, Aaron Christopher Cornwell; great granddaughter, Emma Marie Brown; sisters, Lola Mae Brock Lee, Elizabeth Pierce, and Mary Leona Morris; brother, Thomas Howard Brock of Cheraw, SC.

Survivors include his beloved wife of nearly 65 years, Louise B. Brock of the home; daughters, Cynthia Brock Moore, and Nancy Brock Adams both of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Shannon Moore Phillips (Lloyd J. Tolson) of Chesterfield, SC, Randy Leverne Moore, Jr. of Cheraw, SC, Lea (Daniel) Brown of Poolville, TX, Andrea (Kurtis) Collins of Radcliff, KY, and Corey Faith Wallace of Poolville, TX; great grandchildren, Jeremy Allen Phillips, and Katie Nicole Phillips; brother, John Edward (Dianne) Brock of Cheraw, SC; sister, Diane (Boggan Allen of Ansonville, NC; sister in law, Evelyn Brock; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.

Donnie Lynn Hicks

SOCIETY HILL – Mr. Donnie Lynn Hicks, 52, died on Saturday, February 18, 2023.  Born, August 31, 1970, in Cheraw, SC, he was the son of Johnny Lee and Virginia Parker Hicks.  Donnie worked for 32 years Schaeffler Group in Cheraw, SC.  He was a laid back man, who enjoyed cars, riding, and talking with people.

Donnie leaves behind to cherish his memory, his parents, Johnny Lee Hicks, and Virginia Parker Hicks of Society Hill, SC; daughter, Carmen Garrett and husband, Tyler of Monks Corner, SC; grandson, Rowan Garrett; sister, Darlene James and husband, Paul of Society Hill, SC; and a niece, Selena Chapman and husband, Dusty of Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in Welsh Neck Baptist Church Cemetery in Society Hill, SC.

The family received friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at Kiser Funeral Home.

Gladys ‘GG’ Miles Oliver

RUBY –  Mrs. Gladys “GG” Miles Oliver, age 83, entered into rest on Monday, February 20, 2023 at her home with her family by her side. Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM Friday, February 24, 2023 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Pastor Max White and Brent Taylor with burial following in the Greenlawn Memorial Park of Pageland. The family greeted friends from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Oliver was born March 2, 1939 in Jefferson, SC a daughter of the late Baxter Roy and Verdie Brown Miles. She was a retired employee of Caro-Knit with over 40 years of service and a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church. She was a dedicated homemaker and a proud “G G” to her family. Gladys will be fondly remembered for her servant’s heart and always doing for others.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Oliver was also preceded in death by her husband, Glen C. Oliver; sisters, Evelyn M. Melton, and Louise M. Helms; brothers, Aaron J. “Jr.” Miles, William Lucas Miles, Larry Wayne Miles, Paul Edward Miles; niece, Tamara H. Brendel; nephew, Steven Boatwright; and great nephew, Tyler Hoffman Young.

Survivors include her daughter, Deborah Ann “Debbie” Oliver of Ruby, SC; grandchildren, Moni (Brandon) Rayfield, and Ashley (Michael) Johnson both of Chesterfield, SC; great grandchildren, Kaylee Gardner (Garrett Bragg), Emma Rayfield, soon to be arriving – baby girl Johnson, Dustin Rayfield, and Jamie Johnson; and great-great grandchild, Weston Bragg; sisters-in-law, Dianne (Floyd) Boatwright of Hartsville, SC, Emma Miles (Bill Rogers) of Cheraw, SC, and Frances (Tom) Jones of Chesterfield, SC; niece, Wanda (Russ) Young of Charlotte, NC; nephew, Stan (Teri) Miles of  Stroudsburg, PA, Phillip (Lori) Boatwright of Hilton Head, SC; in addition to great nieces, great nephews, and numerous cousins.

She is also survived by sisters of the heart, Jennifer Jordan, Eunice Jordan, Viola Outen, Doris Johnson, and Rachel Miles; special family friends & neighbors, Karen Rogers, Donna Curtis, Phyllis Miles Curtis, Jerry & Jewell Gregory, and Darlene Smith; her extended work family from Caro-Knit in Jefferson; and her beloved pet who preceded her, “Izzy,” and Izzy’s personal nurse, Carmen Rogers.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to hospice nurse and friend, Kristen Sellers for her exceptional love and care shown to Mrs. Gladys. Special thanks are also offered on behalf of SC Oncology nurses, Ann and Dusty.

Vadis Sellers Turner

CHESTERFIELD – Mrs. Vadis Sellers Turner, age 78, entered into rest on February 23, 2023 at her home. Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM Sunday, February 26, 2023 from the chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Pastor Doug Anderson and Pastor Jason Pope with burial following in the Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Sunday, prior to the service at the funeral home. The funeral service will be live-streamed on the Miller Rivers Caulder Funeral Home Facebook page.

Mrs. Turner was born April 28, 1944 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Leonard D. and Essie Melton Sellers. She was a retired employee of Chesterfield High School where she served as Cafeteria Manager for over 29 years, and served as the Town Pool Manager for many summers. Vadis was a member of Oakland Baptist Church and enjoyed attending Westfield Creek Baptist Church with her family. A lady with a selfless and generous heart, Vadis was always finding ways to be a blessing to others, from cooking and catering, to being a listening ear, she was a friend to all. Of all things in her life that brought joy, being “Grandma” to her grandchildren and “Ta-Ta” to her great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Turner was also preceded in death by her husband, John David Turner; daughter, Sandi Griggs; and brothers, Mike Sellers, and Don Sellers.

Survivors include her daughter, Lori (Tim) Burch of Chesterfield, SC; son, Johnny (Betty Ann) Turner of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Holly (Bryan) King of Ruby, SC, Chrissy (Michael) Shaw of Chesterfield, SC, Jessi Woodall (Mac McCormick) of Chesterfield, SC, Kari Griggs of Concord, NC, Katy Burch of Cheraw, SC, Sara (Rembert) Rogers of Chesterfield, SC, and Ryan Turner of Chesterfield, SC; great grandchildren, Landon Shaw, Hunter Woodall, Jacy King, Aiden Woodall, Cade Rogers, Rae Rogers, Brooklyn Burch, Dalston Shaw, and Lawson Rogers; brothers, Phil (Libby) Sellers of Wilmington, NC, and Tommy (Mona) Sellers of Chesterfield, SC; sister, Glenda S. Lisenby of Chesterfield, SC; sister-in-law, Judy Sellers of Chesterfield, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
