David Harold Lowery

CHESTERFIELD – Mr. David Harold Lowery, age 75, entered into rest on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church (McFarlan, NC) by Brent Taylor with burial following in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 18, 2024 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. Lowery was born on February 25, 1949 in Newport News, VA a son of the late Willie Clayton and Josephine Brooks Lowery. David enjoyed gardening and giving away the produce that he grew. He loved grilling as well as getting his friends and family together for barbecues. Mr. Lowery enjoyed being outdoors especially if he was on a tractor. He also enjoyed working on, and restoring antique tractors. Most of all, David loved spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Lowery was preceded in death by his siblings, Larry Lowery, Dorothy Lowery, and Charles Lowery.

Survivors include his children, Ivy Lowery (Josh) Gardner of Chesterfield, SC, David R. (Beth) Lowery of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Scarlett, Finn, Bella, Jaxon; siblings, Donnie (Mildred) Lowery of McFarlan, NC, Lonnie Ray Lowery of Wadesboro, NC, Mary (Devoide) Teal of Cheraw, SC; sister-in-law, Dottie Ann Lowery of Chesterfield, SC; “brother from another mother”, Bo Ross of Cheraw, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Daniel Emerson Phillips

SURFSIDE BEACH – Daniel Emerson Phillips, age 77, of Surfside Beach, SC, passed away on October 9, 2024. He was born on March 2, 1947, in Fayetteville, NC, to the late John Curry and Sadie Packer Phillips.

Daniel dedicated his career to Winyah Concrete in Murrells Inlet, SC, where he worked until his retirement. He was an avid NASCAR enthusiast, passionately supporting his favorite drivers, Jeff Gordon and Darrell Waltrip. Daniel had a love for Classic Country music and a deep appreciation for cars. Known for his sociable nature, he enjoyed engaging conversations and sharing stories with family and friends. Above all, Daniel cherished his family, with a special affection for his mother and daughter.

Along with his parents, listed above, Daniel was preceded in death by his brothers, Elwood Phillips and William Phillips, and a sister, Virginia Blount.

Daniel leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughter, Morgan Phillips of Erwin, NC; sisters, Gabrielle Watts (Rand) of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Susan Phillips (Adam) of Myrtle Beach, SC; and his former wife and friend, Rita Griggs of Erwin, NC.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, October 14, 2024, at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in Thompson Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield, SC.

Kiser Funeral home has been entrusted to serve the Phillips family in their time of grief.

Merlin Virginia Jacobs Usher

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. – Merlin Virginia Jacobs Usher, 89, passed away peacefully at home in Indian Trail, NC on Monday, October 14, 2024, surrounded by her daughters, caregiver and faithful dog Rainy. She is once again with her devoted husband of 51 years, Percy Usher.

Merlin was born and raised in Bennettsville, SC, the daughter of the late Johnnie and Bessie Carpenter Jacobs.  She was the fourth of five siblings and preceded in death by her brothers and sister: Allen Jacobs, Mildred Jacobs Turnage, Donald Jacobs and Clifton Jacobs.

She dedicated 45 years to BC Moore & Sons warehouse in Cheraw, SC where she found great joy in her work. Her coworkers evolved into lifelong friends, and she cherished recounting her many experiences at the warehouse.

Merlin was lovingly called “Nana” by her three grandchildren and “Aunt Bay” by her nieces and nephews.  She shared a unique bond with each of them and held them dear to her heart. As she grew older, she never forgot their birthdays and anniversaries, always taking joy in celebrating their achievements.

Merlin is remembered fondly by her daughters, Wanda Usher of Mount Pleasant, SC, Sharon (Bo) Caston of Greer, SC, Kathy (Keith) Jones of Indian Trail, NC and Christy (Mark) Kollitz of Kirkwood, MO.  She cherished her role as Nana to Julia Kollitz of San Diego, CA, Samantha Jones of Indian Trail, NC and Andrew Kollitz of Kirkwood, MO.  Additionally, she is survived by her beloved sister-in-law, Cathy Jacobs of Lexington, KY, along with several nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens in Cheraw, SC.

Our family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Myra Jones, who was a devoted companion and caregiver to our mother.  Over the three years she spent with us, she truly became part of our family. We are endlessly thankful for the love and care she showed to our mother.

In lieu of flowers, to celebrate Merlin’s memory, we invite you to embody the message of her beloved hymn, “Help Somebody Today.”  This beautiful song inspires us to look around and notice those in need. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice in her memory.
