Mary Elena Estridge Carter
CHAPIN – Mrs. Mary Elena Estridge Carter, age 91, formerly of Chesterfield, SC, entered into rest on Monday, December 7, 2020 at Generations of Chapin Assisted Living, where she had resided the past 5 years. A Celebration of Life Graveside Service was held at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 10, 2020 at Chesterfield Cemetery. The family greeted friends following the service at the cemetery.
Mrs. Carter was born October 26, 1929 in the Buford Community of Lancaster County, SC to the late Ira Durham and Annie Carnes Estridge. She was a graduate of Buford High School and Winthrop College, Class of 1950. She retired from Chesterfield High School with over 20 years of service as the School Librarian. Mrs. Carter was an active member of Pine Grove Baptist Church where she developed many friendships serving as greeter, and was a former member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. She enjoyed following Clemson football, working in her flowers, playing bingo, and working word search puzzles. She also enjoyed taking trips with Christian Tours. Mrs. Carter will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
In addition to her parents, Mary was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 50 years, William “Bill” C. Carter who passed in January of 2001; and brothers, Madison, Joe, and Jack Estridge.
Survivors include her daughters, Lin (Frank) Lake of Prosperity, SC, Kathy Carter of Myrtle Beach, SC; son, Russ (Amy) Carter of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Carter (Jenna) Lake, Trevor Lake, Rebecca (James) Wood, and Kristin Carter; great granddaughter, Taylor Lake; sister-in-law, Evelyn Estridge; and two nieces and their families.
The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff of Generations of Chapin for its loving care over the past five years, and to MSA Hospice (Newberry) for its compassionate care over the past week.

Johnny Henry Eslick Jr.
September 25, 1952 – December 10, 2020
On December 10, 2020, God welcomed home Johnny Eslick, Jr., or better known to his family and friends as “Little Johnny.” Johnny was a very special son, brother, uncle, and friend. His greatest joy was watching our faces as he told stories of his past. He also enjoyed his Polaris and spending time “piddling” in his work shop.
Johnny was a member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church. He enjoyed helping in the “Living Last Supper” drama and being involved in church activities.
Johnny was preceded in death by his father, Johnny H. Eslick, Sr.
He is survived by his beloved mother, Glynn Curry Eslick of the home; siblings, James “Jimmy” (Joan) Eslick of Eddy, TX, David (Natalie) Cooper of Abington, VA, Bronson (Donna) Eslick of Patrick, SC, and Lucinda Eslick of Jacksonville, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 11:00 AM Monday, December 14, 2020 at Lower Macedonia Memorial Gardens. The family greeted friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
For the exceptional care and comfort provided for Johnny and his family, much gratitude is extended to the entire staff of McLeod Hospice.

Katherine Venable Hardister
MURRELLS INLET – Katherine Venable Hardister, 78, of Murrells Inlet, SC passed away on Monday, November 23, 2020. Born on December 16, 1941 in Charleston, SC, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius Arthur and Katherine Maynard Venable. She is survived by her daughter, Katherine Lane Hardister, of Charleston, SC; brothers, Gerald and James Venable; and her niece, Kyle Venable Brazell and her family; along with Savannah, her beloved Cairn Terrier. She has many other nieces and nephews around the country that will miss her deeply.
Kaye graduated from Cheraw High School in 1959, where she was a cheerleader and a member of the basketball team. She and her family moved to North Wilkesboro, NC, where she met her husband, David. They married and moved to Columbia, SC on April 15, 1960. She attended Appalachian Teacher’s College, followed by the University of SC, where she graduated with an education degree in 1963.
Kaye taught school in NC and SC for over thirty years, and retired in Murrells Inlet, SC. In Kaye’s retirement, she was an avid tennis and bridge player. She loved to garden, sharing her love of flowers with everyone she met. She was also affectionately known to many as the “Cheese Ball Queen”. Kaye spent much time with her daughter, Lane, traveling to events around the area. They were known to “shop their way home”, sharing giggles along the way. Her hardy contagious laugh will be missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, 4182 Highway 17 Business, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. Services were held at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church on December 12, 2020 at 1 pm.

James Talmadge Hudson
CHERAW – James Talmadge Hudson, 92, died December 7, 2020. Born in Swifton, AR, he was the son of the late Alvin Vohn and Lena Hancock Hudson. He was a World War II Army Veteran. Mr. Hudson was of the Lutheran faith. He enjoyed baseball and played professionally in the minor league for the New York Yankees.
Surviving is his wife, Carolyn Lane Hudson of Cheraw, SC, sons, James Hudson of Cheraw, SC, Mark Hudson of Palm Harbor, FL, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
There will be a private family visitation and service.
Michele Staat Rainwater
LEXINGTON -Michele Staat Rainwater, 58, died Sunday morning, December 6, 2020 peacefully in her home. She was lovingly attended by her sister, Laura Staat of Edisto Island, SC at the time of her death.
Shelly was the sweet one and always thought of others. She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was the gentlest dental hygienist for 30 years. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all.
Survivors include her son Ryan and daughter-in-law Ashleigh; grandson, Nick Rainwater; father and step- mother, Darrel and Beverly Staat all of Lexington, SC; brother and sister-in-law, Guy and Jennifer Staat of Wilmington, NC; sister, Laura Staat; brother Blaine; niece Sarah; nephew, David Staat all of New Bern, NC. Michele was preceded in death by husband, Roger Lowell Rainwater in 2013; and her mother, Carolyn Staat Wagner in 2012.
A memorial service was held 11 o’clock, Saturday, December 12th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC. The family received friends following the service.
