Thomas Jefferson ‘Pa-Pa’ Campbell

PATRICK – Mr. Thomas Jefferson “Pa-Pa” Campbell, age 91, entered into rest on Wednesday evening, July 20, 2022 at his home. A private family graveside service will be held at the Campbell Cemetery officiated by Reverend Jerry McManus.

Mr. Campbell was born June 7, 1931 in Patrick, SC a son of the late Thomas N. and Mabel Johnson Campbell. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War and a retired truck driver with Branch Motors of Greensboro, NC. He was a member of Bethel United Church. A man who was known for his quick wit and personality, Mr. Thomas was always quick to tell a joke and loved to keep his wife “on her toes” at all times. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Campbell enjoyed “piddling” in his yard and working on projects. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR. Of all things of importance in his life, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were of utmost importance and enjoyment.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Campbell was also preceded in death by brothers, David Campbell, and Gloster Campbell; sister, Ossie Jordan; daughters, Elaine Yow, and Cookie Campbell.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 72 years, Connie Crowley Campbell of the home; sons, Sam Campbell, and Tommy (Terri) Campbell both of Patrick, SC; daughter, Jackie Marsh of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Trey (Ashley) Campbell, III of Ruby, SC, Matthew Campbell (Hannah) of Chesterfield, SC, Butch Marsh (Nancy) of Hampstead, NC, Nathan (Laura) Marsh of Greensboro, NC, Chris Yow (Wanda) of Randleman, NC, and J.J. (Grandis) Hyatt; great grandchildren, Georgia, Sunni, Kolin, Benjamin, Ashley, Brody, Miranda, Kaitlyn, and Alex; great-great grandchild, Aldrena; brother, Alton Campbell of Camden, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family is very thankful for the love, support, and extraordinary care provided to Mr. Campbell and their family by Regency SouthernCare Hospice of Chesterfield. A special thanks to nurses, Brandi, Denim, Jenn and the entire staff for their care.

Janice Hopkins Jacobs

CHERAW – Mrs. Janice Hopkins Jacobs, 81, died on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.  Born, March 4, 1941, in Marlboro County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Marie Speight Hopkins and the late Charles Z. Hopkins, Jr. Mrs. Janice was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Cheraw, SC and was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed travelling, flowers, photography, and watching birds, especially hummingbirds. Janice also enjoyed getting her hair and nails done and shopping.

Along with her parents, listed above, Janice was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart, her loving husband of 57 years, Scott Jacobs; and her sisters, Wanda Hopkins Haire, and Judy Hopkins Hall.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her son, Richard “Richie” Scott Jacobs, Jr. (Shannon) of Cheraw, SC; daughters, Dana Jacobs Evans (Brad) of Pageland, SC, and Ann Jacobs Smith (Steve) of Cheraw, SC; grandchildren, Brittany Harpe (Graham), Dustin McKenzie (Sara), Grayson Mills (Richard), Mallory Smith (Brent), Scott Smith, Storm Jacobs (Emily), Bailey Jacobs, Madison Jacobs, Cruise Jacobs, and Aleiya Evans; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2022, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cheraw, SC.

The family received friends following the service at the Cemetery.

Lester Johnson

RUBY – Lester Johnson 75, died Monday, July 18, 2022. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 2pm from the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church, Ruby SC. He was born January 15, 1947 in Chesterfield, SC to the late Mike Thomas and Inez Johnson. Survivors: wife, Mary Joines Johnson; son, Terry Bryant Joines, Fayetteville, NC and daughter, Capricia Johnson Gaither (Rickey), Jefferson, SC; grandchildren, Nicholas Bryant Joines, Augusta, GA, Zachary Joines, Kokomo, IN, Halea B. Max Ross McCormick

CHERAW – Mr. Max Ross McCormick, 84, died on Saturday, July 23, 2022.  Born, April 10, 1938, in Ellerbe, NC, he was a son of the late John William and Laura Jane Talbert McCormick. Max was a member of Cheraw Church of God and served as a councilman.  He loved fishing, watching football, and most all sports.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Laura Jane Talbert McCormick and his father, John William McCormick; brothers, Archie “Bill” McCormick, Frank McCormick, Doran McCormick, Marion McCormick, John McCormick, Herbert McCormick, Robert McCormick, and Joe McCormick; sisters, AnnieTaylor Dye, Agnes Treece Whillington, Peggy Webb, and Lucille Faircloth.

Max leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Ann Dixon McCormick of the home; sons, Tommy McCormick (Cathy) of Greenback, TN, David McCormick (Cheryl) of Rockingham, NC, Mackie McCormick of Patrick, SC, and Sandy McCormick of Cheraw, SC; daughters, Cathy Poag (Robert) of Jasper, GA, and Misty McCormick of Cheraw, SC; brother, Jerry McCormick of Ellerbe, NC; sister, Louise Lucas of Ellerbe, NC; 13 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at Cheraw Church of God.  Burial will follow in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, SC.

Jean Lyon Schauer

WALLACE – Mrs. Jean Lyon Schauer, age 97, entered into rest on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at her home. Graveside services were held at 2:00 PM Thursday, July 21, 2022 at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens by Reverend Charles Teal. The family greeted friends from 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM on Thursday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Schauer was born July 13, 1925 in Windham, CT a daughter of the late Winfield H. and Cornelia Hellen Cobb Lyon. She was a retired employee of Cooper Industries – Weller Division and enjoyed spending time with her family. Mrs. Jean was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing and crocheting.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Schauer was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry Fredrick Schauer; sons, Daniel Thomas Schauer, and Craig Adam Schauer; half-brother, Clayton Lyon; and daughter-in-law, Dodi Schauer.

Survivors include her sons, Mark (Faye) Schauer, Kirk Schauer both of Wallace, SC, and Gary (Karen) Schauer of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Dawn (John) Simmons, Caryn Schauer, Thomas (Lucille) Schauer, Kirk (Heather) Schauer, II, and Jennifer (Tad) Polson; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; half-sister, Barbara Flood of W. Palm Beach, FL.

Ralph E. Watson

CHESTERFIELD – Mr. Ralph E. Watson, age 68, entered into rest on Saturday evening, July 23, 2022 at his home surrounded by his loving family. A Celebration of Life Service will be 4:00 PM Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at Chesterfield Baptist Church by Pastor Randy Bishop. The family will greet friends following the service at the church and other times at the home.

Mr. Watson was born April 4, 1954 in Savannah, GA a son of the late Buron Augustus Watson, Jr. and Mildred Farr Watson. He was a graduate of Hershcel V. Jenkins High School in Savannah, GA and attended Georgia Tech University. Ralph owned and operated Classic Builders for over 25 years and was the former owner of Watson Jewelry & Gifts. He was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church where he served on the security team and was a former member of the building and grounds committee.

Mr. Watson was currently serving his second term on the Chesterfield County Council – District 7 and was the current President of Green River Country Club Board of Directors. He also served as co-founder and former president of The Chesterfield Branch of The Lions Club International. Ralph was a member of the Chesterfield Masonic Lodge #220 and the Omar Shrine Temple. He also served as an honorary member of the Chesterfield Rescue Squad. Ralph was an avid golfer and recently scored his first hole-in-one on the 6th hole at Green River Country Club in April of 2022. Of all things of importance and enjoyment in his life, everything came second to being “G-Dad” to his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Watson was also preceded in death by brother, Buron Augustus “Ronnie” Watson, III; niece, April M. Watson; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Charles and Edith Atkinson.

Survivors include his devoted wife of nearly 43 years, Karen Atkinson Watson of the home; children, Candice Watson (Jared) Godfrey of Mt. Croghan, SC, and Derek (Susie) Watson of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Isabella Godfrey, and Millie Godfrey; brother, Louis (Ponda) Watson of Savannah, GA; sisters, Beth Stevens of Pooler, GA, Gini (John) Hill of Savannah, GA, and Althea (Ashley) Barre of Pooler, GA; sister-in-law, Cynthia Watson of AL; brothers-in-law, Tommy (Libby) Atkinson of West Columbia, SC, and Barry (Martha Kay) Atkinson of Laurens, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their gratitude to hospice nurses, Kristen Sellers & Taylor Curtis and the entire staff of Regency Southerncare Hospice for their exceptional love and care shown to Mr. Watson and his family.

Sherwin David Welch

Sherwin David Welch, 85, of Florence, SC, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2022. He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Eura Alec and Gladys Kirby Welch. He is preceded in death in addition to his parents by his siblings, Freda Denham, Lonnie Welch, EA Welch Jr., and Kembley Welch. Sherwin was a 1956 graduate of Bonair High School and furthered his education by taking technical classes in Atlanta, GA. He served in the SC Army National Guard and worked at Sears and Roebuck for 17 years. Sherwin served his community in so many capacities. He helped to establish the Howe Springs Fire Department, where he volunteered as a fireman, he was a chairman of the Florence County Recreation Department, the chairman of the Florence County Transportation Commission, the President of the SC Health Care Association, and served on the American Health Care Association Board. He was also a proud businessman, having been an original stockholder and former President of the Board of Cain Calcutt Funeral Home, an original stockholder of WPDE TV, the Founder and President of Heritage Home of Florence, Grand Strand Health Care and Cheraw Healthcare. Sherwin was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church and was awarded the Palmetto Patriot Award from Andre Bauer. He was an outdoorsman, loving to hunt, fish, waterski and boat and he loved his farm on lynches river and sharing it with his grandchildren and nephews. Surviving is his loving wife of almost 63 years, Mildred Bradford Welch, two daughters, Paige Sharon Welch and Temple Welch (Joel) Dyson of Cheraw, SC; six grandchildren, Jeffrey (Julie) Skinner, M.P. Skinner, Jonah Dyson, Wesley Dyson, Bradford Dyson and Kirby Dyson; two special sisters-in-law, Violet Welch and Pat Bradford; a number of nieces and nephews; and his special extended family, the Staff of Heritage Home of Florence. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 18, 2022 in the chapel of Cain Calcutt Funeral Home with entombment to follow in the Mt Hope Mausoleum.
