Melissa Kay Hatley

CHERAW – Mrs. Melissa Kay Hatley, 48, died on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Born, August 29, 1973, in Darlington, SC, she was the daughter of Kathy Marie Newton Dixon and Freddy Hall. Melissa will be remembered as a beautiful soul, who had a beautiful sense of humor and loved her family more than anything. She was artistic and enjoyed crafting, music, and drawing. Melissa was a loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, and friend, and will be missed by all who knew her.

Melissa is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Bogan and Agnes Hall, and her maternal grandfather, William David Newton.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving husband, Jonathan Rance Hatley of the home; daughters, Britney Nicole Howle (John Mark Barber) of Cheraw, SC, and Rebecca Lynn Leviner (Anthony) of Cheraw, SC; her mother, Kathy Newton Dixon (Dewayne) of Cheraw, SC; father, Freddy Hall (Judy) of Hartsville, SC; grandson, Ashton David Leviner; maternal grandmother, Mary Ruth Newton of Cheraw, SC; and several aunts and uncles.

A funeral service was held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, SC. Burial followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens in Cheraw, SC.

The family received friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. just prior to the service on Saturday at the Funeral Home.

Kiser Funeral Home has been entrusted to serve the Hatley family in their time of grief.

Gloria Frances Garrick Motley

Funeral services for Mrs. Gloria Frances Garrick Motley were held Friday, July 29, 2022 at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church. Burial followed at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Cheraw.

Mrs. Gloria G. Motley was born in Columbia, South Carolina on June 14, 1932 and passed away on Friday July 22, 2022 at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC.

Gloria was born to Julian and Lennie Bell Garrick who preceded her in death.  She was educated in the public school systems of Columbia, South Carolina and later graduated from Benedict College where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.  She later became certified in library science.

 

Upon graduating from Benedict she moved to Cheraw, South Carolina where she started her career as an elementary school teacher at Robert Smalls Elementary School but spent the majority of her 30 years as the school librarian.  It was here she met the love of her life Wilbert Motley whom she joined in holy matrimony on July 20, 1956.  He preceded her in death on December 30, 2020.

Gloria became a member of Pee Dee Union Baptist Church where she later became a deaconess. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Retired Teachers Association and the NAACP. Gloria also volunteered at Cheraw’s Matheson Memorial Library and served on the Chesterfield County Election Board after her retirement. Gloria loved to travel, read and spend time with her family.

Gloria is survived by her adoring daughter, Leslie Ann Motley Hall and grandson, Landon Hall; devoted nieces: Valerie Gregory (Carlton), Francine Motley Clarke (Morris), Victoria Motley Washington, and Lisa Marilyn Willis; nephews: Ralph Hazelton (Vivian), Ronald Hazelton, Toby Garrick (Jackie), Leutrell Osborne (Rose), Frank Motley Jr. (Valerie), Thomas Motley, Michael Motley and Bryan Motley; and a host of grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. She will be dearly missed by those who had the blessing of knowing her.

Services were entrusted to Morris Funeral Cottage of Cheraw.

John ‘Johnny’ Douglas Roscoe Jr.

PATRICK – Mr. John “Johnny” Douglas Roscoe, Jr., age 51, entered into rest on Thursday, July 28, 2022. Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM Sunday, July 31, 2022 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Pastor Drake Horton and Jerry Gainey with burial following in the Roscoe Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 3:00 – 4:00 PM Sunday, prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home of his sister, Regina Sellers.

Mr. Roscoe was born July 21, 1971 in Chesterfield, SC a son of Carolyn Lewis Roscoe and the late John Douglas “Doug” Roscoe, Sr. He was a heavy machine operator who traveled working shut-downs his entire working career. Johnny was a member of Bay Springs Baptist Church and enjoyed attending Palmetto Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Chesterfield Masonic Lodge #220. Johnny was both an avid NASCAR and USC Gamecocks fan. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and grilling for family and friends. Johnny was a very proud “Pa-Pa” to his beautiful granddaughter, Ella Rose.

In addition to his father, Mr. Roscoe was also preceded in death by his niece, Charlene “Charlie” Sellers.

Survivors include his daughter, Lacy Roscoe (Timothy Hodges) of Patrick, SC; granddaughter, Ella Rose Hodges; mother, Carolyn Roscoe of Patrick, SC; sisters, Regina (Kenny) Sellers of Patrick, SC, and Barbara Gail (Chris) Sellers of Chesterfield, SC; nephews and niece, Steven Sellers (Ashley), Brandon Sellers (Deana), Zack Sellers (Madison), Josh Sellers (McKenna), Holly (Boo-Boo) Rayfield; great nephews and great niece, Easton, Ella, Harrison, Lukas, Hudson, Rhett, Calhoun, Kaine, and Stetson.
