Margaret Steen Chavis

BENNETTSVILLE – Mrs. Margaret Steen Chavis, 98, died on Sunday, August 21, 2022.  Born, July 7, 1924, in Marlboro County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Hope and Minnie Roscoe Steen.  Mrs. Chavis attended Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Wallace, SC when she was able.  She will be remembered as the Matriarch of the Community, always helping and loving others.  She enjoyed quilting and gardening.

Along with her parents, listed above, Margaret was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, George Wilson Chavis; 1 brother and 7 sisters.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, a son, Jimmy Chavis (Neva) of Orangeburg, SC; a daughter, Joyce McQuage (James, Sr.) of Bennettsville, SC; a sister, Frances Haithcock; and many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Wallace, SC.  Burial will follow in Chavis Family Cemetery in Bennettsville, SC.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, SC.

Kiser Funeral Home has been entrusted to serve the Chavis family in their time of grief.

Robert Marion Ellis
Robert Marion “Bob” Ellis was born in Chesterfield on September 17, 1941, to Richard Marion and Bessie Pusser Ellis.  He died on August 1, 2022, in Palm Harbor, FL.
Bob graduated from Chesterfield High School in 1959 and from The Citadel in 1963.  He met his future wife, Mary Ellen Lane, a student at Queens College, and they were married in June, 1964.  Over the years the  Ellis family lived in many places, including Ft. Polk, LA; Lakeland and Tampa, FL; Newtown, CT; and Roswell, GA.
Following service as a paratrooper in the U. S. Army and then in the Army Reserves, Bob worked in operations management for Allied Department stores, including Maas Brothers,  Read’s, and Rich’s  before obtaining his realtor license and selling real estate in Georgia.
He was a devoted Presbyterian, Methodist, and then Presbyterian again.
Bob had a love for nature, especially birds and deer. He also had a tremendous appreciation for all sports but especially football.  He loved national and international politics and truly was the definition of an American patriot.
A memorial service was held on August 7 at the East Lake United Methodist Church in Palm Harbor, Florida.
Bob leaves behind his three daughters and their husbands: Martha (Jeff) Sisarsky of Indian Rocks Beach, FL; Dr. Melissa Ellis (Jeff Doyle) of Durham, NC; and Meredith (Numi) Brennan.  He is also survived by his sisters, Hazel Ellis of Bakersfield, CA and Rachel (Richard) Early of Stanardsville, VA.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen; his sister, Ruth Ellis Hunley, of Monroe, NC; and his brother, Carl, of Chesterfield.
He will watch over his eight loving grandchildren: Emma, Ben, Jackson, Morgan, Mollie, Charles, Lane, and Mary Ellen.

Jesse Thomas ‘J.T.’ Helms Jr.

MT. CROGHAN – Mr. Jesse Thomas “J.T.” Helms, Jr., age 84, entered into rest on Saturday, August 6, 2022. Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at Cross Roads Baptist Church (Family Life Center) by Pastor Max White and Dr. Troy Rogers with burial following in the church cemetery. The family greeted friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service in the family life center.

The funeral service was live-streamed on the Cross Roads Baptist Church of Ruby Facebook page.

Mr. Helms was born October 31, 1937 in Mecklenburg County, NC a son of the late Jesse Thomas Helms, Sr. and Minnie Marze Helms. He retired as Sergeant with the Mecklenburg County Police Department with over 25 years of service. He was also the former owner and operator of Helms Lawn Sprinkler Company. J.T. was a faithful member of Cross Roads Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, member of the building and grounds committee, and member of the cemetery committee. He was very active in both the S.C. Disaster Relief Team and the Cross Roads Men’s Ministry, where he was very instrumental in the building of handicap ramps across Chesterfield County. A true people person, J.T. never met a stranger and was willing to go the extra mile to help anyone.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Helms was also preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Helms; brother, James Helms; and sister, Virginia Hovis.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 20 years, Gail Helms; children, Timothy Eric (Jenni) Threatt of Fort Mill, SC, and Sheila Threatt (James) Finkel of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Joshua, Katherine, Carla, and Noah; sisters, Lois Belk, Peggy Shoemaker, Kallie Hatchell, and Phyllis Parker; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carolyn Perhealth

WALLACE – Mrs. Nancy Carolyn Perhealth, 80, died on Saturday, August 13, 2022.  Born, December 16, 1941, in Marlboro County, SC, she was a daughter of the late George Wallace and Thelma Quick Rainwater. Carolyn was a member of Whites Creek Freewill Baptist Church in Wallace, and loved the churches that her husband previously pastored, Windsor Park Freewill Baptist Church and Twin Pines Freewill Baptist Church. She loved helping little children, always donating to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. She enjoyed working in her yard and flowers, fishing with her husband, traveling, camping, and dancing. She was always devoted to her family, raising them in church and never working, so that she could raise her children. Mrs. Perhealth will be remembered as a kind loving lady, who knew no strangers.

Along with her parents, listed above, Carolyn was preceded in death by her loving husband, Rev. Wayne Perhealth; a son, Kelly Perhealth; brothers, John Rainwater, and Danny Rainwater; a sister, Christine Rainwater; and a son-in-law Carl “Winky” Robertson.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughters, Lynn Hatcher (Greg) of Wallace, SC, Christine Robertson of Wallace, SC, and Valerie Roscoe (Justin) of Wallace, SC; a brother, Richard Rainwater (Ann) of Wallace, SC; a sister, Jeannette Sinclair (Richard) of Rockingham, NC; 6 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at Whites Creek Freewill Baptist Church in Wallace, SC. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery.

The family received friends from 4:00 until 5:00 p.m. just prior to the service at the Church on Wednesday.

The family would like to thank a special friend, Margaret Brigman for helping care for Mrs. Perhealth the last few months; and a special thank you to her grandson, Alan Hatcher for all he did for his grandma during her illness.

Julie Smith

JEFFERSON – Julie Anne Smith, 59, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday August 11, 2022. Born July 10, 1963 in Norfolk, Virginia she was the daughter of the late Barbara Anne Smith and the late Joseph Harrison Smith.

Throughout her life Julie spent many summers taking family trips to Nags Head, NC, and spoke of those cherished memories often as well as the love she had for her beloved dog, Rocky. Her favorite color was purple. She was an avid Dallas Cowboy Fan and enjoyed listening to the music of the “Back Street Boys.” Julie was of the Catholic faith. She was employed at the work-shop through CHESCO services and enjoyed her job and the support that she received from staff. She had a heart of gold and was a loving and caring lady who knew no strangers and always found a way to accomplish whatever she set her mind to. She was deeply loved and will be forever in the hearts and minds of all who she left behind.

In addition to her parents, Julie was preceded in death by her brother, Mike Smith, two sisters; Kelly Smith, Kimberly Smith and her lifelong chosen “Uncle” Chuck Michaux.

Julie leaves behind to cherish her memory, her sisters; Beth Demoranville (David) of Longwood, FL, Maria Enzor (Mike) of Deltona, FL, her God Parents Carolyn and Don Lichok of Downingtown, PA, her lifelong chosen “Aunt” Peggy Michaux of Cheraw, SC, also, special friends, Bobby and Melissa Roscoe, 4 nieces and 1 nephew; Emily Smith, Jennifer Jackson (Nick), Lindsay Bryant (Kiel), Juliet  Dold, Jason (Susie) Demoranville as well as 3 great nieces and 5 great nephews, Ella, Addison, Beau, Dakota, Savannah, Jacob, Braeden and Noah.

The family received friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 18, 2022 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service conducted by Father Bill Oldland was held on at 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 18, 2022 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.
