Susan “Gilmour” Eschenfelder
CHERAW – Susan “Gilmour” Eschenfelder, 55, died on Friday, September 30, 2022.
Susan was a daughter of Faye and the late Robert John Eschenfelder. She spent her early years in Pennsylvania.
Susan was a member of the S.C. Broadcasters’ Association and was instrumental in helping develop WCRE into an award-winning station. She could be found in the radio station running the board most Friday nights during Cheraw Braves football broadcasts. Before coming to WCRE, she worked at Z103 in Cheraw and WFMO and Z101 in Fairmont, N.C.
Susan liked to say she got her start in broadcasting because she could read, and her voice on the radio was often the calm in literal storms as she advised people about school closings and road conditions. Her commitment to helping people in times of trouble led to her being a member of the Chesterfield County Emergency Preparedness Task Force.
In addition, Susan was a member of Cheraw First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and took an active part in the life of the church.
Susan enjoyed crafting, including sewing and making jewelry, singing and reading.
She is survived by her mother, Faye Eschenfelder of the home; a daughter, Amy Michelle Eschenfelder of the home; and a sister, Ellen Jane (Rick Fieldman) Eschenfelder of Lansdowne, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert John Eschenfelder.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at First United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Kiser Funeral Home.
