Nancy R. Young

CHERAW – Nancy R. Young died peacefully in hospice care in Florence, SC on July 30th, 2023, after battling a serious illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 65 years, Cornelius B. Young, her parents James and Etta Mae Robinson of Lancaster, SC and an infant brother.

She attended Erskine college and graduated with honors with a degree in elementary education.

Our mom loved life, her friends, her adventures with her friends, her time with her children and grandchildren, and 3 great- grandchildren. She had three children. They are Karen Young Banks (Ronnie) of Florence SC, Sarah Margaret Young (Kara) of Leeds, Alabama and David C. Young (Wendy) of Marbury Alabama.

Her three grandchildren brought joy to her life. They are Russell Mathewes (Apple) of Aiken, SC, Sarah E. Mathewes of Florence, SC, and Kevin Mathewes (Liz) of Florence, SC.

More joy entered her life when her great- grandchildren arrived. A son, Ryan, was born to her granddaughter, Sarah, six years ago. She loved this boy and watching him learn and grow and discover the outdoors. Later, she was blessed with another great- grandson born to Russell and Apple Mathewes. She described him as a “beautiful boy who always smiled”.

At her last hospitalization, she agreed to try rehab to strengthen her muscles because she told the doctor that she wanted to be around long enough to see her first great- granddaughter born to Kevin and Liz. And, the Lord gave her this wish, her great- granddaughter was born the day before she left us, and she got to see a picture of the new baby girl. Although she was very weak, she became alert and smiled and said, “she’s a beautiful girl”. We are all so thankful that the Lord allowed her this opportunity.

She loved working outdoors in her yard or as she lovingly called it “digging in the dirt. She found wonder in finding new varieties of plants that she would put into beautiful pots that she constantly moved around until she found the perfect spot. She enjoyed her birds and she and dad watched and fed them daily. In fact, they had to drive to Florence to find just the right.

kind of seed. Mom loved her friends and called them “gifts from God”. She loved her family, and she loved giving to others.

She loved First Baptist Church Cheraw where she was a member for many years. She was a quiet Christian in that she didn’t talk about God as much as she lived her life in a way that others could see God in her…the way she lived and loved.

The world will never be the same without her in it.

These qualities live on through the lives of her children. She taught us about simple joy or as she put it, “the free things God gives “the birds singing, beautiful flowers, unusual rocks, shells found at the ocean, trees, and much more. She said that these things made her simply content.

She left her mark on this world and will be greatly missed.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4, 2023, at Kiser Funeral Home. Burial followed at St. David’s Cemetery in Cheraw, SC.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to McLeod Hospice House, 1203 E. Cheves St, Florence, SC 29506.

Kiser Funeral Home has been entrusted to serve the Young family in their time of grief.
