JoAnne Cassidy Buck
CHERAW – Jo Anne Buck, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 15,2024 at the age of 79. She was a cherished matriarch, known for her warm heart, creative spirit, and love for her family.
Born on November 26, 1944, Jo Anne was not only known for her warmth and kindness but also for her exceptional talents in the kitchen and with crafts. She delighted in preparing delicious meals and desserts, her cake decorating skills earning her recognition in several contests. Her culinary creations were surpassed only by her love for her family, which she often expressed through her cooking.
Large family gatherings were her joy, where she could share her love for cooking and crafting with those she held dear. Her presence brought light and laughter to every occasion, creating memories that will be cherished for generations to come.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ray Buck, and is survived by her son, Ken Buck (Jill) of Indian Land, daughter Joely Lord (Heath) of Waxhaw, grandchildren, McKenna, Lily, Ryan, and Aubrey and three great-grandchildren, Juniper, Cedar, and Forest. Her family was her pride and joy, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will be carried on by all who knew her.
A private celebration in her memory will be held at a later time.

Mary Elizabeth Freeman Kelly
CHERAW – Mary Elizabeth Freeman Kelly, 86, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at McLeod Health-Cheraw. She was born in Chesterfield County to the late Walter Alexander and Dora Freeman, on August 7, 1937. Mary attended Cheraw area schools. She worked over 20 years at Cheraw Dyeing and Finishing. She and her husband loved to go on cruises with numerous other couples in the community. She also loved to go on bus tours. She just loved people and traveling. Mary was a collector of antiques. She loved sports, especially football.
She was preceded in death by her parents listed above, and five siblings.
Mary leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of 66 years, Gus Kelly, Jr.; two sons, Ray Carole Kelly of Wallace, SC; and Robert Wayne (Paige) Kelly of Cheraw, SC, her daughter-in-law Paige was like a daughter, a sister, Margaret Juttner, of Walterboro, SC, and four grandchildren, Jeremy (Mary) Kelly, Elisha Grooms, Robert Andrew Kelly, and Rachel Kelly, four great-grandchildren, and numerous close friends. She had four friends that were special to her, Jimmy and Libby Pigge, and Neil and Margaret Jackson.
A funeral service was held at Kiser Funeral Home, Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 12 Noon.
The family received friends from 11:00 AM to 12 Noon.
Burial followed the funeral service, in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to thank the staff at McLeod Health-Cheraw for the excellent care they gave her and the kindness they showed to the ones who were there with her daily. A special thank you to Dr. Travis Novinger and his staff who took care of her medical needs for years.

Margie Gainey McLain
CHERAW – Mrs. Margie Gainey McLain, age 85, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family. The funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at Westfield Creek Baptist Church by Pastor Doug Anderson and Pastor Jason Pope with burial following in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family greeted friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Tuesday, prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. McLain was born August 13, 1938 in Laurel Hill, NC a daughter of the late Ems and Mamie Jacobs Gainey Soles. She was a retired employee of Delta Mills with over 36 years of service. She was a faithful member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church. Margie’s presence at the church was a true blessing, as she actively participated in various ministries such as the Shut-in and Nursing Home ministries, the social committee, and willingly volunteered at the annual Vacation Bible School. She held a special place within the Senior Saints group and will be dearly missed for her unwavering faith and dedication to prayer.
Margie also found joy in activities such as going to the gym with her coordinated attire, occasionally indulging in shopping excursions, tending to her flowers, engaging in crafting projects, and immersing herself in reading. Her selflessness knew no bounds as she consistently prioritized her family above all else, displaying a profound and deep love for them throughout her life.
In her later years, Margie enjoyed connecting with friends through Facebook, where she shared words of encouragement and uplifting scriptures. She also enjoyed working word search puzzles. Her impact on those around her was marked by a genuine concern for others and a steadfast dedication to serving her Lord, her family, and her neighbors.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. McLain was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Alcie McLain, Sr.; brothers, David Gainey, and Charles Gainey; and grandchildren, Henry A. “Trey” McLain, III, and Wesley Lee McLain.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty M. (Lance) Boatwright of Cheraw, SC; sons, Henry A. McLain, Jr. (Edna White), and Anthony Wade “Tony” McLain both of Cheraw, SC; grandchildren, Angie Denise Boatwright, Anthony Chadwick “Chad” (Nicole) Boatwright, Aleshia McLain, and Anthony Clint “Bubba” (Meghan) McLain; 10 great grandchildren; and 1 great -great grandchild.

John Scott Owen
CHESTERFIELD – Mr. John Scott Owen entered into rest at his home on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the age of 70. In accordance with John’s wishes, there are no formal services scheduled.
Mr. Owen was born on July 4, 1953 in Wadesboro, NC a son of Mary Frances Burch Owen and the late Scott Gardner Owen. John graduated from Chesterfield High School in 1971 where he was a talented basketball and football student-athlete. After graduating, John joined the Army where he served for 4 years in the 82nd Airborne division before being honorably discharged. Mr. Owen returned home and began taking courses at Chesterfield-Marlboro Tech where he would graduate with an associate’s degree in history. Mr. Owen worked for many years managing the Car Quest Auto Parts in Chesterfield. He then went on to retire from INA after managing their warehouse for over 20 years. In his retirement, John enjoyed fishing and golf. His passion however, was for music as he enjoyed collecting and listening to old records.
In addition to his father, Mr. Owen was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Burch Owen; and brother-in-law, Chucky Wayne Crowley, Sr.
Survivors include his sons, Austin Scott (Jena) Owen of Ruby, SC, Dylan Preston Owen (Kensley Lewis) of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Wyatt Owen, Nash Owen; mother, Mary Frances Burch Owen of Chesterfield, SC; siblings, Anne Owen (James “Jimbo”) Howey of Lancaster, SC, Ellen Owen Crowley of Chesterfield, SC; nephews, John W. “Mac” (Jessi Woodall) McCormick Jr., Chucky W. “C.J.” Crowley, Jr. (Madison Teal); niece, Anna Howey (Shawn) Adcock; brother of the heart, Dick (Ellen) Griffith of Chesterfield, SC; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Jean Martin ‘Marty’ Shobe
CHERAW – Mr. Jean Martin “Marty” Shobe, age 71, entered into rest peacefully on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 with his family by his side. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, June 21, 2024 at FreeWorship of Cheraw. The family will greet friends following the service at the church.
Mr. Shobe was born on January 29, 1953, in Pasadena, CA, to the late James and Ethel Parranto Shobe. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Cal State – Hayward and dedicated many years to his profession as a Construction Estimator. Marty was a faithful member of FreeWorship of Cheraw, where he served as a Deacon. Known for his passion for music, Marty excelled as a tenor singer for over 30 years with the San Francisco Bay Area Chamber Choir and the Cantiamo Sonoma Band.
Golf held a special place in Marty’s heart; he found joy in playing regularly and also contributed his time as Marshal at various tournaments, notably the AT&T Tournament at Pebble Beach. He will be cherished for his vibrant personality, boundless humor, and warm demeanor towards all he encountered.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Shobe was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Valentino.
Surviving Mr. Shobe is his wife of 48 years, Gail Bergman Shobe; children, Teresa (Kevin) Liao of Dublin, CA, John (Ashley) Shobe of Hercules, CA and Nathan (Barbara) Shobe of New Boston NH; grandchildren, Aidan Liao, Arianna Liao, Aurora Shobe; Riley Shobe; Elizabeth Shobe; and Levi Shobe; siblings: John (Debi) Shobe of Washington; Deanna DuBois of Carrollton TX; Patricia (Steve) Wright of Mariposa CA; Pete Shobe of Carrollton TX; Teresa (Barry) Gutfeld of Haslet TX; Virginia (Salvador) Herran of Carrollton TX; Paula (Tommie) Stidman of Globe AZ; Joseph Shobe of Forest Hill, CA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
