Peggy Sue was born on August 5th, 1947, in Wadesboro, North Carolina, the eldest of four children born to Woodrow Shelton Hamden, Sr. and Margaret Helen Gaddy. She grew up in Cheraw, South Carolina, and graduated from Cheraw High School, where she was Valentine’s Queen, played sports, and was a cheerleader.
Following high school graduation, Peggy lived in Charlotte, North Carolina where her oldest child Donna was born. She later returned to Cheraw, where she married Ed Estridge in 1969 and raised two sons together, Mac and Ashton. She fervently pursued the goal of raising well-rounded young men, teaching them to love music, how to dance, about all things domestic- cleaning, cooking, baking, ironing, sewing, etc., as well as the pursuit of knowledge, wit, and good storytelling.
In the years to follow, Peggy married Steve Stewart and began to split her time between their place at the beach and Cheraw. They enjoyed many hobbies, laughs, and good times together over the years. She and Steve loved one another unconditionally and stood by each other through the struggles of life.
Among her many joys during this time was being reconnected with her adult daughter Donna. It soothed her soul knowing that all her children were finally united. Her children very much share that sentiment. Having all her family gather together brought her immense joy, and she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchild more than anything.
Peggy Sue had many loves and interests. She had a huge personality, and her sense of humor was second to none. She loved all her friends fiercely and didn’t know what a stranger was. She loved participating in activities at her church, First Presbyterian of Cheraw, as well as with the Red Hat Society. The family acknowledges with grateful appreciation the loving care provided by the staff at McLeod Regional Medical Center. They would also like to acknowledge her close friends that showed love and support to her through her tough times.
