Michael ‘Mike’ James Assef

CHERAW – Michael “Mike” James Assef, age 70, passed away on November 4, 2024, He was born on April 2, 1954, in Worcester, MA, to the late Ade T. and Marion G. Assef.

Mike was a cherished member of his community, known for his sociable nature. He found joy in simple pleasures such as riding around town, spending time by the pool, and engaging in friendly games of pool. A dedicated sports enthusiast, he passionately supported the Dallas Cowboys and the Carolina Gamecocks, as well as enjoying Westerns and football games.

For over 50 years, Mike made his mark as a locksmith, owning and operating Goodyear Lock and Key and Goodyear Shoe Shop, where he served his customers with commitment and skill.

Along with his parents, listed above, Mike was preceded in death by his loving wife, Judy Assef.

Mike leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughters, Michelle Leigh Griggs (Kevin) of Wallace, SC, and Stephanie Dawn Hollis of Wallace, SC; a niece whom he raised as a daughter, Kimberley McKenzie of Cheraw, SC; grandchildren, Sierra Quick Broach, John Christopher Quick, Hannah Nicole Griggs, Kevin Griggs, Jr., and Mason Bryant Hardwick; nieces and nephews, Faith Hatcher, Noah Hatcher, Jacob Hatcher, and Gabrielle McKenzie.

The family received friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2024, at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, SC

Margie H. Deaver

WALLACE – Margie H. Deaver, 81, went to be with her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

Funeral services were held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Calvary Baptist Church in Bennettsville with burial in Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Wallace directed by Cooper Funeral Home.  Visitation was held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church.

Born in Marlboro County, SC, March 11, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Marvin “Son” Haithcock and Margaret Louise Freeman Gainey.  She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and was retired from Delta Mills.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Charles E. Deaver of Wallace, SC; daughter, Teresa Burgess (Frankie) of Wallace; sons, Christopher Driggers (Katlend) of Cheraw, SC and Joshua Driggers (Sharon) of Lake City, SC; grandchildren, Aaron Burgess (Kristin), Damian Driggers, Drake Driggers, and Ava Driggers; great-grandchildren, Brynn and Bristol Burgess, Charles “Charlie” Driggers and Baker Driggers.

Mrs. Deaver was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin Haithcock & Margaret Gainey; her first husband, Julion Terrell Driggers; and her sister, Joyce Starling.

Melvin Linwood Wooten

CHESTERFIELD – Melvin Linwood Wooten, 76, passed away on November 7, 2024. He was born on November 22, 1947, in Cheraw, SC, as the youngest of seven children to Melvin R. Wooten and Irene Biles Wooten.

Melvin proudly served in the United States Army, retiring as Sergeant First Class, where he also contributed as the Assistant Chaplain. He was known for his simplicity and traditional values, cherishing his family and his love for animals. A devoted Christian, Melvin enjoyed spending time outdoors and embraced the beauty of nature.

Along with his parents, listed above, Melvin was preceded in death by a grandson, David Wooten.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his son, Michael Linwood Wooten (Nikki) of Chapin, SC; daughters, Gloria Bryant (Dana) of Chesterfield, SC and Ginger Lee Wooten of Patrick, SC; grandchildren, Gabrielle Faulkner (Jason), Joel Pollard, II, Laquisha Smith (Tyler), Ralph “Bo Bo” Burns, Jurnee Wooten, Kayden Wooten, Kinley Wooten, Mia Wooten, and Jacob Evans (Lauren); and eleven great-grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be held at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Kiser Funeral Home has been entrusted to serve the Wooten family in their time of grief.
