Woman airlifted after dog attack in Chesterfield
A woman was airlifted on Friday, Aug. 29, after a dog attack left her seriously injured.
According to Sheriff Cambo Streater, deputies and animal control officers responded at 7 p.m. to 1098 Hunts Mill Rd. in Chesterfield to a report of an active dog attack involving a 78-year-old female victim.
Once on scene, animal control officers determined that the owner of the dogs had already secured the animals. Streater said the victim sustained severe lacerations to her body, head, and neck.
Due to the extent of her injuries, she was airlifted to a trauma center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she remains hospitalized.
Animal Control seized both dogs from the property and transported them to the Chesterfield County Animal Shelter.
The owner of the animals, Kathy Shami, has been charged with two counts of animal at large and two counts of rabies violation.
The case remains under investigation, and officials have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges.
“Our first priority is the safety of our citizens. We are committed to ensuring that incidents of this nature are thoroughly investigated and handled according to the law,” said Streater.
