Warming shelters to open across county

As freezing temperatures and hazardous winter weather move into the region, local officials in Chesterfield County are opening warming shelters to provide residents with a safe place to escape the cold.

The Town of Cheraw announced it will open the lobby of the Cheraw Police Department, located at 258 Second Street, as a county-wide warming shelter. The shelter will be available Saturday, Jan. 24, and Sunday, Jan. 25, offering residents a warm, secure location during the cold weather.

In addition, the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office, 203 Watson Street in Chesterfield, will open a warming center in the event of inclement weather. Residents who have lost power or need a place to warm up, charge a cell phone, or seek temporary relief from the cold are encouraged to call 843-287-0235 for assistance. A valid form of identification is required. Sheriff’s deputies will be on duty and will continue to monitor road conditions to ensure public safety.

The Town of Pageland will open a warming shelter at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Pageland Community Center, located at 1113 W. McGregor Street.
Officials emphasized the shelter is for warming purposes only. Individuals using the facility must bring their own food, drinks, and cots or bedding. Alcohol and illegal drugs are strictly prohibited.
