Man arrested after shots fired at Patrick home

Ruben A. Huggins

A 21-year-old man has been arrested following a shooting incident in the town of Patrick.
According to
Sheriff Cambo Streater, deputies responded Sunday, March 15, to the area of Griggs Street in reference to a reported shooting.
When they arrived, individuals at the residence told authorities that a bright blue SUV had pulled up and an unknown male fired multiple rounds toward the house before fleeing the scene.
Streater said deputies found multiple spent shell casings in the roadway and nearby areas, along with damage to both a vehicle and the residence.
Deputies also learned that a similar shooting had occurred at the same location about 40 minutes earlier, involving a vehicle matching the same description. No injuries were reported in either incident.
Later that day, during a shift change,
Streater said deputies received information that the suspect vehicle had returned to the area. Officers responded and located the SUV behind a nearby residence, where they established a perimeter and issued verbal commands.
A male subject exited the residence and complied with deputies without incident. He was taken into custody and identified as Ruben A. Huggins, 21, of Patrick.
During the investigation, deputies recovered a firearm, ammunition, and other evidence believed to be connected to the shootings.
Streater said Huggins was transported to the sheriff’s office, where he was advised of his rights and agreed to speak with investigators.
During the interview, Huggins admitted to firing multiple rounds at the residence on two separate occasions due to what he described as experiencing a manic episode.
He was arrested and transported to the Chesterfield County Detention Center without incident.
“This type of reckless behavior has no place in our community,”
said Streater said in a statement. “We are thankful no one was injured, and we commend our deputies for their quick response in locating and safely apprehending the suspect.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be pending.
